  • For my dessert loving friends

Fresh fruits and vanilla ice cream over a hot freshly made waffle
  • Waiola Shaved Ice

    525 Kapahulu Ave
    Honolulu, HI 96815-6801
    808-735-8886

If you're in Honolulu you know it's hot and humid here.  And nothing says refreshing than a a nice cold dessert or a iced cold drink.  So imagine have both in one in the form of shaved ice with lots of flavors!

For now, the exterior is very run down but they're planning to move very soon.

It's a very basic interior but it serves its purpose:

They have a lot of flavors available.  It's almost like all the flavors they have available for bubble tea.

Large Rainbow Shaved Ice (cherry, banana, and vanilla):

They put lots of shaved ice and then poured out the flavors.  The red mixes with the yellow, the blue mixes with the yellow, and finally the blue mixes with the red.  So beautiful.  Just like the rainbow I saw when I arrived in Honolulu last night.  The ice was very finely crushed.  The flavors were very subtle. For $3.02, this is an amazing deal.

They're moving soon so be sure to look up their new address if you decide to go to Waiola Shaved Ice.  Inside seating is made up of metal stools and ledges along the wall and window.  There is also outside plastic chairs and tables.  They say they're have the best shaved ice in Hawaii and that's very possible but I don't think it was really that super and definitely not worth the ~25 minute walk I took to get here. But if you have a car and fancying some shaved ice, it's worth giving this place a try to see if it's better than your usual shaved ice fix.

Rocher de Monaco, Monte Carlo, Monaco

Monte Carlo lies in the French Riviera on the Mediterranan Sea in Monaco surrounded by France and Italy.  Monaco is a principality so there is a prince governing Monaco and his palace sits on Rocher de Monaco:

Rocher de Monaco is a busy tourist location during the summer and features a number of boutiques and restaurants.  Unfortunately I went on a rainy day in cool springtime so it was very empty.

Standing in an empty street on Rocher de Monaco.

There weren't many stores open when we got here at 5pm on a weekday.  The whole Rocher de Monaco was so quiet.

One of the few places I walked by that was open was this bakery.  I peered in and saw lots of yummy breads.  They say French bread is good so I wanted to get one.

The only way I remembered the name of the bakery is this bag:

I secretly ate it in the bus.  I think it was frowned upon so I left most of it for when I got off the bus.

    The chocolate croissant:

Unfortunately I got there at the end of the day and you could taste that in the croissant.  It was still flaky but most of it was hardened.    Chocolate was good though.  They used semi-sweet chocolate chips.  It would've been a much more yummy croissant if they used a thin slice of dark chocolate.

Maybe I'll try this bakery again if I come earlier and if I don't find another bakery.  What a disappointment for my first croissant in Europe.

  • La Pizza Cresci

    06000 Nice

Nice is the second most popular city in France after Paris.  It is situated in French Riviera along the Mediterranean coast.  Having been founded over a thousand years ago, Nice is a very old city with many old architecture to see and many small shops to peruse.  We went in April which was too cold to really enjoy swimming in the water.  But it was hot enough to enjoy a nice sun tan.

Nice is surrounded by hills that help moderate the temperature year round.  The harbor holds many yachts of various sizes:

I personally didn't find anything particularly exciting in Nice except for lots of street foods just tempting me to spoil my dinner.  The streets of Nice were very busy throughout the day.  It was especially busy during the lunch or dinner time because of the wealth of restaurants.  We saw a lot of people at this restaurant so we decided to try it out (you've probably done the same thing before):

The inside is very tightly packed.  It's definitely not supersized.  There's seating upstairs too.

I was seated back to back with another person with little wiggle room.  Table is small so it's quite intimate but lighting was very bright.  The outside seating was too cool for our liking in April.

    Napolitaine Gnocchi:

The tomato sauce was fresh and light.  The gnocchi was chewy with a nice bouncy texture to them.

Reine Pizza - tomato, ham, cheese, mushrooms:

Nice is just a short train ride away from Italy so I had high expectations on the pizza.  And it didn't disappoint.  This was one of the best pizzas I've ever had.  It was fresh and hot out of the stone oven.  The cheese was gooey mix of mozzerelli, Parmesan, and Romano.  Wow.  This wasn't a napoleon style pizza so the crust was thickish and very soft.  It's probably not the best pizza in the world but one of the best I've had.

We luckily came right before the peak dinner hour so we avoided the long line.  Service was decent but nothing to write about.  Non-alcoholic drinks are expensive as with any French restaurant so we drank wine.  The pizza and pasta were so good.  I would definitely recommend stopping by this restaurant if you're in the area.

Pulse

  • Future note for myself & anyone visiting Hawaii, taxis are a major rip & should avoid.  Considerably more expensive than NYC
  • It's just my luck.  Ono was closed yesterday. Belladonna is closed today even tho the sign says it should be opened. Fail.
  • Sadly the Travel Channel becomes an infomercial at night. What do u do when ur channel goes infomercial? Change the channel or go to bed
  • Watched Man vs. Food yesterday and I'm wanting wings!!  Does watching food on TV influence ur appetite?
  • Both have food shows, which do you prefer, Travel Channel or Food Network? My vote goes to Travel!!
